Unfortunately we have to report that this past Christmas wasn’t joyful for everyone. Where to buy retrogames in London

6 Oct

retrogames retrogaming london

We really love everything it’s about video games, but the fact that we are from the 80s makes us really sensible to the retrogaming subject. In fact we’re not just gamers, but also avid collectors, and a part from that retro games are cool!

So why don’t help others londoners, or just people passing by the city, to find and locate the very few places where they can phisically buy retrogaming stuff? No reason not to help, so here’s our secret spots.

Dispite what you might think, London is not the best place on earth where to buy retro games, and the best option is always the internet, but still, the excitement of touching, rubbing and smelling something you’re going to buy, especially if it’s a 20 years-old cartridge, is something the internet will never replace.

So getting started, the major places where you can get retro stuff are essentially three.

retro game base london

The first place is a retrogaming dedicated store called Retro Game Base. It’s located in Stretham (South-West London) and could be easily described as London’s retrogaming heaven.

From the outside you would think much of it, but once entered your eyes will shine and your mouth watering. A not so small room completely filled with gaming goods from the very beginning of gaming history till a generation ago.

Everything sold here is in quite pristine conditions and every single item has been tested by the expert staff of the store. This is definitely the best you can get in London and you won’t regret the trip till here.

What about prices? Well, we have to admit that the prices of consoles are average, not too expensive nor cheap, but games and especially accessories, spare parts and peripherals are absolute bargains! If you’re looking for something specific, like a specific region conole (i.e. Japanese Dreamcast) and it’s not in stock you can kinda order it and the next one coming it’s yours.

Don’t forget to take a look (and than dry your mouth) at the little glass case just under the till, containing all the most valuable and rare items!

Also, they got some arcade cabinets and modded Xbox free to play!

x electrical retrogaming

The second place where you can find some retrogaming goodies in London is not a dedicated store, in fact it’s actually a music intruments shops. It’s called X Electrical and it’s based in Hammersmith (West London).

So we said music instruments…what’s the dead? Well, from the outside yes, but if you look closer, the shop window displays some random Mega Drive and N64 cartridges! This is exactly how we firstly found it. We decided to enter just to ask what was the deal of the window and boom! “Secret” back room full of retrogaming (but also current gen) stuff!

x electrical retrogaming

Store staff is really kind and if you ask they’ll open to you all the displays to let you touch the goodies. They got plenty of stuff, but it’s difficult to explain you of which kind, because everytime you get there the articles are always different!

Consoles prices are average (and sometimes too high), but the games…well, they’re basically free! We mean, prices are so low that you’ll get out of the room hands-full!

We highly reccomend to pop in frequently to check the latest arrivals, even if they update their site on a daily base. Here are all the details and stuff you’ll need:

The last place to get retro games in London is not a proper store, or at least not just one. In fact the third category is taken by three UK franchises: Cex, Cash Converters and Cash Generator.

Inverness CeX Small

All of them are basically pawn shops, with a little difference for CeX that buy and sell just electronic and entertainment stuff.

For this category there’s not general rule, they basically buy stuff in exchange of cash, so you need to enter quite frequently to check what they got at the moment. It’s not always true that you can find retro games in those shops, but given the high amount of stores spread all around London (and UK in general) it’s quite probable you’ll find some.

Obviously here we’re talking about pure blind hunting, but usually when you find something prices are low, even if the items are not always well shapes. Definitely forget about mint conditions here.

We got no specific store tips for those three franchises, but generally the ones away from  the city center have items laying in for ages, and it’s more probable you find something good and valuable.

Good hunting!

Sure, you can always find some interesting stuff in various car boot sales and flea markets, but since they’re not phisical places (and they’re A LOT in London) we’re not gonna review them now.

For now this is all, but we’re gonna put more info and more store as soon as we find more!

Feel free to share if you know something else or better!

Resident Evil Revelations’ launch event in London will feature a blood-filled swimming pool

14 May

resident evil revelations

You already know that Capcom marketing guys are pretty insane (let’s say completely bonkers). We know it from the previous event for the launch of Resident Evil 6 that featured a fake (but incredibly real-looking) human meat market (pictured below).

resident evil 6 human meat market

But that wasn’t enough…so, what about a blood-filled swimming pool with torso floats, intestines as lane markers, and all kinds of nasty and rotten objects floating in the water including bloody bandages, eyeballs, tendrils and blood clots? Disgusting? Good, because that’s exactly what is going to happen in London next weekend, at the official RE: Revelations launch event.

Capcom is promising big time to all the Resident Evil event attendants, warning fans to expect a ”shocking, gory and an incredibly disturbing experience – the perfect way to show that survival horror is back with a bang for Resident Evil Revelations”.

Interested? Better be quick because only 200 free tickets will be available here on May 20th (from 9.00am). While waiting to can kill some time zombies with the Resident Evil Revelation demo, already available on Xbox 360 and Wii U (PlayStation 3 owners have to wait till tomorrow)

The Heart Of Gaming is the closest thing to a Japanese Game Center outside Japan

28 Apr

The Heart Of Gaming london arcade

Everybody always whines about the lack of decent arcades in Europe and US. We obviously do the same, since there are no enjoyable game centers in London, apart (maybe) from the Namco FunScape, but it’s more a family style arcade, with bumper car, bowling and all.

But don’t despair, things are going to change! In fact, from mid-April you are able to enjoy The Heart Of Gaming!

In a world where arcades have been replaced by casinos and slot machines, a portion of that great period in history arises, blending the gaming scene of yesteryear, with the games of the past, present and future.

The HOG is basically the closest thing to a real Japanese Game Center. They got plenty of SEGA VS City cabinets with lots of different fighting games, but also regular NAOMIs, NAOMI DXs and other super cool machines covering many other genres (like vertical shmups). And that’s not all, because there are countless Xbox 360 and PS3 available to host your own console fighting!

Sony UK teases something about a new Ovosonico IP (?)

21 Mar

ovosonico sony uk teaser egg

Just few days ago we told you about Ovosonico signing with Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Europe, to work together on a new intellectual property.

Today we report a strange thing teased by Sony UK on their Facebook page. Indeed they posted a weird red mechanical egg (picture above) just saying “It’s coming…”.

It could be everything, even a new Iron Man game as far as we know…but why we suppose it is something related to Ovosonico? Simply because Massimo Guarini (founder of Ovosonico) shared the news about the egg on his Facebook profile and on Ovosonico’s official page.

Obviously this is just a rumor, but it could say that the announcement of the new IP from the Italian indie studio is coming soon. Stay tuned.

The making of Metal Gear Rising murals

7 Mar

Surely you still remember the amazing and huge murals made by End Of The Line in London, Liverpool and Leeds for the launch of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Well the game is now out (and it’s amazing) and Konami decided to release a video “making of” of the three graffiti. Enjoy (and expect some heavy dubstep).

Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa attending UK launch of Metal Gear Rising

21 Feb

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is one of the most hyped titles of this 2013 and Konami is putting a lot of effort in the UK launch. As we already told you, a series of giant Raiden murals has been created in three UK cities and every single bus in London has its own MGR advertisement on it.

But that’s not all, indeed Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa will be visiting London video games store GAME (the one in Westfield Shopping Center, Shepherd’s Bush) to attend the launch and sign some copies of the game.

GAME has also sent a press release for the midnight event:

Celebrate the launch of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in the company of gaming legends Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa

On 22nd February GAME will host legendary videogame director Hideo Kojima at Westfield White City to celebrate the official UK launch of the long-awaited Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Not only will the living legend be present at the event – Mr. Kojima will also be taking part in a Q&A in front of the crowds at the White City GAME store before the clock strikes twelve.

After satisfying the crowd’s curiosity about the inner workings of one of the most successful franchises in videogame history, Mr. Kojima will be joined by Konami lead artist and series creative director Yoji Shinkawa to serve the first 200 people in the queue their copy of the game. That’s right: 200 lucky gamers will receive their copy of Revengeance straight from the hands of the two men who created it! Gamers will then get the money-can’t-buy opportunity to have their picture taken with Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa; a great souvenir of the night to make them the envy of all their gaming friends.

Fans who have been working on an exoskeleton suit on their day off, have a kickass Gray Fox costume ready in their wardrobes, or want to crawl around Westfield in a “clever” cardboard box disguise are encouraged to arrive in cosplay to show Mr. Kojima and Mr. Shinkawa their inventions brought to life by their British fan base.

GAME is taking questions direct from the UK gaming community for Mr. Kojima. Gamers can tweet @GAMEdigital with their questions using the hashtag #GAMEAsksKojima and the best questions will be answered on the launch night by the man himself.

Dave Howard, Stores Director at GAME said: “We are over the moon that Hideo Kojima and Yuji Shinkawa are joining us for the launch of Revengeance at GAME, White City. They are legends in the gaming world and it’s going to be an unbelievable night for the gaming community. Mr. Kojima and Mr. Shinkawa have been the driving force behind some of the most high-calibre and forward-thinking games to grace our screens and it will be a real privilege seeing them up-close and personal, answering our community’s questions. It’s all set to be an unforgettable experience for our Metal Gear fans and one which is not to be missed!”

Customers who pre-order the game before the night will receive a GAME exclusive Steelbook Cover illustrated by Mr. Shinkawa, plus the download code for an in-game bonus available at no other European retailer: Raiden’s Inferno Armour. The in-game bonus increases the number of throwing weapons that the character can carry. All copies of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance purchased at GAME also include the character Gray Fox, the original Cyborg Ninja from the hugely popular Metal Gear Solid, as downloadable content.

Looks like a good opportunity to meet two of the greatest game designers of all time. If you’ll be around London tomorrow, don’t let this chance go.

As you can see, after travelling from USA to France and Italy, Kojima is heading to London

**UPDATE (21 Feb 2013, 18:04)**

Well, it seems that if you want to attend the event you have to actually move your ass NOW and get there.
