10 May

sega pluto

We’ve already told you about the SEGA Pluto console dropped on a eBay auction few days ago. Well, now the auction is over, but the prototype stills unsold.

We saw this coming. The seller was quite greedy to put such an high reserve price, that remains unknown, but for sure is more than $15.5k, that was the final bid reached by the auction.

Will the seller try again? We really think so…stay tuned!

SEGA Pluto up to auction on eBay

7 May

SEGA Pluto prototype console ebay price

Do you remember the huge revelation about the two super-secret SEGA Pluto prototype consoles we told you a while ago? Good, because one of them is currently on eBay.

Yep, that was predictable. In the end it’s just two-of-a-kind so we’re not really surprised about that (saw that, at least, one of the owner didn’t even know what the hell it was).

The thing that wasn’t predictable is that the auction has already reached more than $8000 and it’s still 3 days to go. Yes, that’s an huge amount of money! But don’t get too excited, because the actual eBay auction says that the reserve price has not been met yet (you, greedy bastard!). For now we can just wait, we’ll keep you posted!

30 Apr

Ryo Hazuki First 4 Figures SEGA shenmue

Any Shenmue fan out there? We guess so! So here’s a good news!

Nop, it’s not about any project/hope/fundraising regarding Shenmue 3, but it’s still good to see that SEGA gave the license to First 4 Figures to create the most amazing and well-made statue of Ryo Hazuki you’ve ever seen!

Ryo Hazuki First 4 Figures SEGA shenmue

First 4 Figures presents Ryo Hazuki, the protagonist of the cult-classic Dreamcast game Shenmue, as the first entry in an entirely new line of SEGA All-Star statues which will look at a range of legendary characters from SEGA’s past and present. Standing at 1/6 scale, and 12 inches in height, cast in high quality polystone and painted by hand, he is stood in a ‘ready for action’ stance, ready to take on any challengers as he walks the streets of Yokosuka.

The statue look AMAZING and incredibly detailed. Look the below close-up to the blue-jeans…simply staggering!

The figurine is highly limited to 350 pieces worldwide (even if a previous post by F4F said 750, so we’re not really sure about this). It comes in deluxe full color packaging, hand numbered base (that is the legendary Phoenix Mirror in case you didn’t notice), and includes an authenticity card which allows you to purchase the same number of the model next in the SEGA All-Stars series.

So what’s the price tag? Well…this beauty will cost you $169.99

Yep, it is not cheap, but if you’re already in “shut up and take my money” mood, here’s the link to pre-order it!

The Heart Of Gaming is the closest thing to a Japanese Game Center outside Japan

28 Apr

The Heart Of Gaming london arcade

Everybody always whines about the lack of decent arcades in Europe and US. We obviously do the same, since there are no enjoyable game centers in London, apart (maybe) from the Namco FunScape, but it’s more a family style arcade, with bumper car, bowling and all.

But don’t despair, things are going to change! In fact, from mid-April you are able to enjoy The Heart Of Gaming!

In a world where arcades have been replaced by casinos and slot machines, a portion of that great period in history arises, blending the gaming scene of yesteryear, with the games of the past, present and future.

The HOG is basically the closest thing to a real Japanese Game Center. They got plenty of SEGA VS City cabinets with lots of different fighting games, but also regular NAOMIs, NAOMI DXs and other super cool machines covering many other genres (like vertical shmups). And that’s not all, because there are countless Xbox 360 and PS3 available to host your own console fighting!

The Heart Of Gaming london arcadeSounds too good to be true? This is how it works.

The woman who bought NES’ Stadium Event for $7.99 is selling it

22 Apr

nes stadium events rare

Do you remember the woman that last week found and bought an ultra-rare copy of Stadium Events for just $7.99? Well, obviously she’s selling it, for a $12k!

The list, hosted on GameGravel, says:

“This is it! This is the one you have been waiting for. NES Stadium Events CIB in excellent condition. This item is complete with box, cartridge, black case, manual, and even the original styrofoam in the bottom of the box. Any condition questions should be resolved with the photos provided. We have tried to take as many photos as possible to give an accurate description of the game and all aspects of the packaging.”

Unfortunately, the auction is open for US residents only, so fuck you if you live elsewhere! But at least you can check it out if you’re curious about the final price.

Woman buys an old NES game worth $15k for only $7.99 at Goodwill

17 Apr

stadium events nes nintendo bandai rare

Just imagine to walk in your local Goodwill (or CeX or whatever sells used stuff in your city) and among all the usual garbage you find the holy grail! Yep, that’s what happened today to a North Carolina woman…she just bought an ultra-rare copy of Stadium Events for $7.99 at her local Goodwill.

What is Stadium Events and why it’s so rare? Well, in this case Wikipedia is your friend, by the way the North American, or NTSC, version of Stadium Events is universally accepted as the rarest licensed NES game out there (Yep, there are grey and gold NWCs, that’s why we said “licensed”). The reason for its rarity is due to limited production and sales. At the time of its launch in 1987, Stadium Events was only available from limited stores. In 1988, Nintendo purchased the North American rights to the FFF mat technology and re-released it as the Power Pad.

The two Family Fun Fitness-branded games that had already been released, as well as Bandai’s version of the running pad accessory, were pulled from shelves and presumed destroyed. Because of this odd sequence of events, only 2000 copies are believed to have been produced, of which it is estimated that 200 copies reached consumers before being recalled. Today, collectors who follow the online sale of rare video games believe that fewer than 20 complete copies of the game exist, only two of which are known to be factory sealed.

Said so, let’s continue with our fairytail. The unknown (but so damn lucky) woman, took the cartridge with a bunch of other garbage games to a local video games stores in order to raise some money. The clerck of the store nearly fainted seeing the holy grail. He reported that the game isn’t sealed, but in mint condition, evaluating the item around $15k.

The woman said that she will be getting it VGA graded, so we might see it on eBay sometime soon.

Our thoughts and prays are now for the poor and disgraced guy that originally took the game to Goodwill…

sturmwind duranik dreamcast

Few weeks ago we received from Germany our press copy of Sturmwind! What is it? Easy, it is a brand new homebrew shooter game for the SEGA Dreamcast (obviously not an official release approved by SEGA) by Duranik.

Sturmwind is an old school shmup, a very traditional one indeed, where you don’t have to think a lot, just follow one simple rule: if it moves, shoot it!

sturmwind duranik dreamcast

Behind this little masterpiece there is Duranik, a German indie development team, known for its previous attempt to create a shooter game on a dead console: Native for the Atari Jaguar.
It is very likely that Sturmwind has born from that failure, trying to make a better game, more accessible even to modern players, but sticking to the great classics guide lines.
That’s why Duranik has chosen the Dreamcast, that despite its premature dead, it is more widely available and more powerful than any other cool retro-console (no, ps2 isn’t cool, nor powerful).

Sturmwind tries to take advantage of every bit of the Dreamcast hardware and supports a wide range of effects, indeed we can call it a perfect mix between 2D and 3D, leading to an astonishing visual impact.
We surely can’t hide out excitement playing a bran new game on our favourite console of all times, and it’s safe to say that Sturmwind could have been released on XBLA and PSN without any problem.

sturmwind duranik dreamcast

The game is pretty straightforward, you can play the normal mode with all 16 levels or the arcade mode with only 6 levels and no continues. In normal mode your progress will be saved with every finished level (obviously you’ll need a VMU to save your progress).

Speaking of pure gameplay, Sturmwind is very enjoyable (despite the CG intro with german voiceover or the unreadable german names of the weapons and levels) and once you start to play you’ll quickly understand every game dynamic, as the three weapon selection, the backfire and the point system. Duranik guys said that the game is designed for all Dreamcast fans, it is no hardcore maniac or score shooter. Even average players are able to see more than the first level. There is a good bit of memorization involved as with most of this type of games but that is part of the fun.

sturmwind duranik dreamcast

We said that Sturmwind is a game for everyone, so it’s not hardcore? Don’t worry, it is a highly addictive and a very challenging game; it could not be like a modern bullet hell game from Cave, but we prefer this way…even because on the Dreamcast we want to breathe a sort of old school flavour, and Sturmwind perfectly accomplish this job! (if you want to go crazy, just set the hard mode!)

And guess what? Sturmwind has also online leaderboards, but you won’t need to connect your dusty DC to the internet: in fact, your copy of the game will generate an unique code for your highest score, then you’ll just have to put that code with your nickname in this site…done! Online leaderboards!

SEGA partners with Enterbrain to release some cool laptops

12 Feb

sega pc

We all want a new SEGA console, maybe a Dreamcast 2, but you know, this is never gonna happen.

Instead of realize our dreams (and most likely bankrupt for real this time), SEGA decided to collaborate with Enterbrain, a Japanese PC retailer, to create a new laptop series. These PCs, called SEGA NOTE PC, will feature a choice of four lid finishes: SEGA blue, SEGA Mega Drive, SEGA Saturn and SEGA Dreamcast; and they all look pretty awesome.

sega pc note

These SEGA NOTE PCs will be available in four different models, from entry-level to top-level, and the most powerful (and expensive) will feature all the four retro-covers. Here are the specs and prices.

sega pc note

Now the bad news (beside the not-so-cheap price range from ¥99,750/£682/€793/$1068 to ¥194,250/£1329/€1546/$2080). These PCs will be produced only if  a certain number (yup, we know it’s a little vague) of preorder is  reached. Uh, did we mention that an European/Northamerican release is never ever gonna happen?
