Time for some Ridiculous Fishing!

14 Mar

Ridiculous Fishing

“Follow Billy as he tries to find redemption from his uncertain past. Chase your destiny on the high seas and embark on a heroic quest for glory and gills.”

Basically this is Ridiculous Fishing, a brand new iOS game made by Vlambeer, a Dutch independent game studio founded in 2010 by Rami Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman, creator of Super Crate Box.

Those two guys are quite famous in the indie scene because of their completely nonsense and bonker games, and Ridiculous Fishing isn’t an exception. Take a look at this trailer to understand what we mean…

Understand? Completely mental! WE LOVE IT!

Ridiculous Fishing is out today (March 14th) on the App Store, you can get it here!

Slave Of God | Gameplay

8 Mar

slave of god increpare

Few weeks ago we told you about a new upcoming game from Stephen Lavelle, founder of indie developer Increpare Games, but today we want to show you one of his masterpiece. It’s called Slave Of God and probably it is the most disturbing, weird and seizure-giving game we’ve aver played.

As far as we know the game is set in a nightclub, with loud music, booze, strobo lights and everything, but there isn’t a proper plot…nor a proper objective. It just happen to be there. Obviously (and luckily) the game HAS an end, that could be interpreted in different ways…

During the gameplay you can interact with other NPC, drinking together, dancing….pissing…falling in love.

But you can’t understand the real essence of the game until you play it, or at least watch a gameplay video (flashing light/seizure warning).

You can download the game for free (for both Windows and Mac) from here and/or check other weird games from Increpare here.

Fear the unknown with Darkwood

8 Mar

darkwood survival horror

Darkwood is an upcoming top-down, old school survival horror set in a procedurally generated open world, so every single time you play, you’ll find a different environment and experience. It features some RPG elements with intense fights and a very dark atmosphere.

The game is currently developed by Acid Wizard, and indie studio composed by just three people, and will be available for PC on a TBA date.

In their website, the developers explain some of the key features of Darkwood, such as the permadeath (if you die, your savegames get deleted and you have to start over), the skills set and the crafting.

The game is in a pre-aplha stage, but you can take a look at it with this trailer.

TDP Review | Jones On Fire

7 Mar

splash huge

Which was everyone dream’s job when you were children? Be a Fireman!
What is the thing that everyone (especially the internet) love most? Cats!
And who created this game? Megan Fox!

That’s what Jones On Fire is, a cute fast-paced indie game by Glass Bottom Games for iOS (release date: 7th March 2013), where you are the fireman (woman in this case) Emma Jones, busy saving kitties from walls of fire.
The gameplay is quite easy, you enter the stages running from the start to the end, you can jump and slide to avoid fallen trees and fire and to rescue your little furry friends safely to the firestation.

The more cats you save the more points and credits you earn to use them in the shop to buy various upgrades that makes your life a lot easier; yes because when you start you will just have ONE health point and THREE continue and trust me, definitely is not enough!

What we liked of this game is the overall feeling to play an old school arcade, the immediate and addictive gameplay (yes, you want to save them all!) matches perfectly with the design completely made in pixel art. Ok some details should have made better, as for example the background – hint: would be nice to have even a repeated background like, we don’t know, buildings or trees instead of a monochromatic pattern -, but it’s anyway enjoyable plus guess what, we love pixels and cats made of pixels are the best!

A special mention goes to the sound and music, to fit the old school feeling it could be anything else than old good 8-bit chiptunes, indeed inspired by the glorious Tetris-era (ta-tanana-na-na-na… we got you, we know you just started to sing it) you will have the melody stuck in your mind and most of all you will start meowing while playing mocking the golden cat and smiling while you rescue it.

When we started this blog we agreed that we were not going to write game’s reviews, there are tons of sites doing it better than us and honestly is quite boring, so we will not say more than this or start to talk about technical stuff because we honestly believe you have to try games on your own and judge if you like it or not. Take this article more as an advice and a way to support indie studios and people that like and put a lot of efforts (and money) on their job.
Bare in mind Jonas On Fire is a mobile game offering you few hours of good fun and is even FREE to play, you can eventually buy some of the upgrades with real money (but is not necessary to go on).

At this point we guess you’re still wondering why we mentioned Megan Fox up there, of course it was just to keep your attention (you dirty mind!).
Well, not really, we didn’t lie to you, Megan Fox (they share the same name) is the lovely girl behind Jones On Fire (and co-founder of Glass Bottom Games with Lisa Foster), together with Nathan Madsen and Michael Nielsen. With this name, wouldn’t you give a chance to the game?

Still not convinced, even after our preview and this review (damn, we really write so bad?)? So take a look at this release trailer!

Better now? C’mon, grab it for free from the App Store! And don’t forget the soundtrack on BandCamp, totally worth it!

**UPDATE (11 March 2013)**

Glass Bottom Games announce the release of Jones On Fire to Android devices. It’s available on GooglePlay, with other marketplaces soon to follow, for $1.99 – all with no in-app purchasing (IAPs) mechanics of any kind.

They’ve also shifted the iOS version to $1.99, and a patch is in the pipe to similarly rebalance the game and strip all IAPs (though any IAPs made pre-patch will continue to function).

Better or worst? You decide…but we’re still enjoying saving kitties 🙂

Help Bob to get back to his bed

4 Mar

back to bed bob bedtime game

That wasn’t a metaphor, in this indie game you actually have to help Bob the sleepwalker to get back to his beloved bed. How? Controlling Subob, his subconscious guardian, through an honiric and Dalì-like dream world.

Sounds weirds, and it is indeed. But it also looks amazing and deep. Also a bit creepy…

The project is from Bedtime Games (so appropriate name) and Rusty Dice Digital Games, two Danish indie developers. Back to Bed was originally developed in a student production under the Danish Academy for Digital Interactive Entertainment (DADIU), in the fall of 2011. The members of the production team was made up of student from different universities, art schools, and the Danish Film School. The goal of the production was for student to experience being a part of a full production team, complete with roles and responsibilities. The result of the production is a game with a dozen level and a bunch of different mechanics for puzzles.

The game is currently on Kickstarter looking for funds.

To better understand the game mechanics take a look at the trailer below and/or try the demo.

Runner2 will be available tomorrow

25 Feb

bit trip runner 2

Do you remember Bit.Trip Runner? Yup, that wonderful, weird and very frustrating game in which you had to run, jump and kick stuff all on music rhythm from Gaijin Games guys…and now (well, tomorrow) we have a sequel! It’s called -suprise suprise- Runner2, but unlike the not-so-original title, the game graphically looks really different from the previous one (you decide if it’s good or not), even if it feels the same fast paced running action (and this is good for sure).

Anyway the game looks good, and we think it could be a must-have for all rhythm/side-scrolling-running games fan! Runner2 will be available tomorrow (Feb 26th) on basically every console and gaming system, so you got no excuses for not buying it (unless you really care about not breaking your controller)! In the meanwhile enjoy this launch trailer.

Edmund McMillen from Team Meat talks about Mew-Genics

25 Feb

mew-genics

Seems like we are literally surrounded by cats-related games! After our last week’s little post about Jones On Fire (expect a sort-of-review when the game will be out next week) we are here again talking about kitties! This time with Edmund McMillen from Team Meat, one of the two guys behind Super Meat Boy, and a new project for PC, iOS and Android: Mew-Genics!

mew-genics

What’s this game about? Hard to say (kitties?), but McMillen tried to explain it a bit on his blog:

“For the past 17 weeks we have teased many aspects of Mew-Genics, but none were totally clear on what the game actually was and how it played. Part of this was due to the fact that we have basically been working on the game as long as we had been teasing it, so we ourselves were a bit in the dark on the details, but the main reason was because Mew-Genics is a hard game to explain.

I think most would describe Mew-Genics as a cross between The Sims and Pokemon with a sprinkling of Animal Crossing and a dash of Tamagotchi , but at its core the game really isn’t like anything we’ve seen before.

Mew-Genics revolves around Cats, obviously. We knew tending to these cats in a simulated “cat lady” environment would be the foundation of our design, but the core of what we are trying to do is make a game that feels alive, a game that creates stories as you play where consequences actually mean something…

I could write a book on the design of mew-genics, it’s by far the most complex game I’ve ever worked on and it’s definitely pushing us both on many levels.”

mew-genics

Still don’t get it right? Ok, let’s try with McMillen talking about one of his playing experiences with Mew-Genics:

“Last week I was playing a game with Puddle, a fat female cat I had been working on earlier that day, I thawed her out of her Cryo-cube and placed her in my current single story house along with her newly generated companion Champ. I had been focusing my time on Puddle due to the fact that she seemed to have a very unique tail that I believe had helped her place 2nd in a cat pageant in a previous and I needed to breed her so I could continue her bloodline before she got too old. Sadly Champ wasn’t up to snuff and Puddle made this obvious by repeatedly kicking him in the face, I separated them quickly by putting champ in the attic but when I tried to feed him.. something odd happened. See, Champ was a dullard and when Puddle kicked him he just happened to also be eating and now associated the trauma with food instead of Puddle herself, he was scared of all food.. and sadly died in the attic shortly after.

It wasn’t long after though that I caught sight of a solid black stray cat named Goon, before he had a chance to run I grabbed him and pulled him inside. Goon was a much better fit for Puddle and before I knew it the humping started and puddle was pregnant! I put her in the attic with plenty of food and a bed, but quickly noticed that something was up with Goon, he seemed to be constantly falling asleep. As it turned out Goon was a narcoleptic and as you might have guessed Puddle gave birth to 2 sleeping kittens, one of them fat like his mother and black like his dad and the other small but with his mom’s markings and that amazing forked tail that helped in the last pageant, but sadly both kittens were narcoleptic like their father…

Goon acted aggressively towards the kittens so I let him back out into the yard and he eventually ran away. As the kittens grew up I did enter the small one (his name was Dot) into a pageant but sadly he just fell asleep on the stage and didn’t win anything. To add insult to injury Puddle also acquired feline aids from Goon and I couldn’t afford any of the expensive treatments Dr. Beanies was offering so I put her back in the Cryo-cube in hopes that in the future I might have a cure for her disease once I finish a few more of the Doctor’s missions.

I wasn’t able to save Dot because I was arrested by the local animal control shortly after I put Puddle in the cube, probably because of letting Goon run away.. and the whole giving my other cat aids thing… or maybe it was the dead cat in the attic.”

That’s not a lot more clear, but for now it’s the only thing we got. We hope to share some news with you soon.
