After a not-so-cryptic teaser trailer released last week, today SEGA has finally announced Castle Of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, the remake/reboot of the 90s evergreen platformer. Here’s the press release from the SEGA Blog:

“SEGA,  in collaboration with Disney Interactive is pleased to announce the upcoming digital release of Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse, a complete re-imagining of the iconic Genesis side-scrolling adventure first released in 1990. Developed by Sega Studios Australia, Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will be available worldwide for digital download on Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Windows PC in summer 2013.

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse first debuted on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1990 to critical acclaim. Excellent controls, music, and graphics helped to bring the magic of Disney to millions of SEGA fans around the world. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will continue this tradition. Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Castle of Illusion has stunning visuals and new gameplay mechanics. Fans will enjoy the original storyline as they help Mickey save Minnie from the evil witch, Mizrabel.”

Below you can find the bran new announcement trailer and some very catchy HD screens from the upcoming game.

Chris Olson, vice president of Digital Business at SEGA of America, added a personal thought to the press release, we hope to share when the game will be out.

“The original Castle of Illusion was tremendously entertaining and has a well-deserved reputation as a SEGA classic. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse brings this great game to a new generation. Mickey is back and he looks fantastic.”

This teaser from SEGA seems to announce the return of Castle Of Illusion

Earlier today SEGA of America uploaded a mysterious new video on its YouTube channel. The silent b/w teaser really looks like some sort of Castle Of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse remake/sequel.

As you can see, the trailer has no description and the title just says “Summer 2013”, but the style is unmistakeble and this is definitely something about the Genesis’ evergreen Castle Of Illusion from 1990. We are quite sure about this because of the 1990 – 2013 copyright at the end of the video, but also because the game was already added to the brazilian ratings bureau and someone an NeoGAF spotted a box art from the xbox.com HTML code.

So it looks like another Disney’s classic game will see the HD light this year (after the great announcement of Duck Tales Remastered by Capcom last month). Seems like Disney has something to be forgiven for…isn’t it?

Hyperkin to reveal new RetroN 4 system

6 Mar

RetroN 3 RetroN 4

Hyperkin is an American company specialized in video games accessories and peripherals. They handle the current generation, but they’re quite famous on the net for making and selling accessories and replacements for all the major retro consoles.

They also make new consoles capable to play retro games, like the SupaBoy or the RetroN. Yep, it’s not like playing your Contra III on the original SNES, but it could be an option for those who don’t own a retro system.

Anyway, yesterday Hyperkin revealed its “new” console system, the RetroN 4, that is simply a new model of the RetroN 3 (big picture above), but capable of play NES, SNES, Genesis (or Mega Drive) and GBA cartridges all in one and with an HDMI output. It sounds like  very ambitious piece of hardware, and we can’t wait to take a further look at the console.

In the meanwhile these are the specs from the press release:

RetroN 4 Points of Interest:
·         2 Original Controller Ports for Each Platform (6 Total)
·         Wireless Bluetooth Controller
·         4 Cartridge Ports for NES, SNES, Genesis and GBA cartridges
·         HDMI Output with Digital Signal Conversion
·         “Perdana” Digital User Interface
·         PAL and NTSC compatible

Hyperkin will be unveiling the RetroN 4, at this year’s Midwest Gaming Classic at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, Wisconsin, on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM CST. Stay tuned.

Memorable Video Game Advertisements | 1 – Nintendo // SEGA

As we all know, video games are art (no? wrong blog). But there are something else that usually is left out from the definition of art…advertisements. Obviously not all of them (exactly as not all games are), for example we don’t consider art your local market tv spot or some trash washing powders paper ads as a form of art.

But, what happen when video games and advertising collide? Well, sometimes something special, that gives you goosebumps, sometimes something very weird (anyone said japanese tv spots?).

Said so, MEMORABLE VIDEO GAME ADVERTISEMENTS (MVGA) will be a new periodical (just don’t ask how often) column about the best (and sometimes the worst) video games advertisements of all times. Every issue will feature one tv spot and one print/paper/billboard adv.

Let’s start!

NINTENDO GAMECUBE TV COMMERCIAL

Date: 2001

Country: Japan (any doubt about that?)

Comment: What the fuck did I just see?? Well, probably one of the weirdest best Nintendo commercial so far…Anyway that’s not Tokyo or something, but it was filmed in Hong Kong. And if you’re wondering about the song, it’s “Hatsukoi” by Kojima Mayumi

SEGA GENESIS PAPER ADV

gdwnd_01

Date: 1989

Country: USA (the name Genesis rings any bell?)

Comment: Brilliant! Fantastic! We’ll love this adv forever! This is pure OLD SCHOOL CONSOLE WAR! Thanks to Sega of America CEO Michael Katz for being so arrogant and aggressive; you created one of the best marketing campaign ever!

SEGA Dreamcast & SEGA Mega Drive bags

1 Feb

Everyone loves SEGA (apart for not making Shenmue 3) and everyone have loved its consoles. Especially if we are talking about Mega Drive (or Genesis if you live in the US) and Dreamcast. So if you agree with this, you’ll probably love these two officially licensed bags from Insert Coin Clothing.

123_2

122_2

They’re pretty amazing, aren’t they? They’re made out of leather (I think not real one) and really well printed. And they can be all yours for just £30/£35 (or €39/€45$42/$49 if you prefer). Well, it’s not a bargain, but still, they’re awesome and perfect for revive those beautiful SEGA consoles.

Insert Coin is not paying us for advertise its products, we genuinely love this stuff (we got the Dreamcast one).

If you like them as we do, and you think it’s time to get your geek on (uh, this motto really sucks) you can buy them here (DC) and here (MD) as they ship worldwide.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to SEGA licensing, the Dreamcast logo/bag colour received will be based upon your delivery address: Blue – PAL Regions, Red – North America, Orange – Japan. (and this kinda sucks, we know…)
