Massive Chalice is a massive success

6 Jun

massive chaliceWell, you got any doubt about it? Like almost every Double Fine project, Massive Chalice kickstarter backing was (and still is) a total success! In fact the game presented by the well-known indie developer has been funded in just a couple of days, exceeding the initial goal of $725.000.

Now Double Fine guys are thinking about some sort of stretch goal, here’s the official update:

A lot of people have asked us about stretch goals. MASSIVE CHALICE is still in the pre-production phase of development. We’ve got a TON of ideas around Double Fine HQ that sound awesome, but as with every game, not every idea can make it through production. And now that we’ve announced the game and shared the idea with you guys, we have another TON of ideas! So that’s two tons of ideas we’re trying to fit into a modest budget!

The exciting thing about taking the game to you guys at this early stage is that some of your ideas are even better than ours. As we go through pre-production into production, some of these ideas are going to trump ours, leading to a game that’s more in line with what our community wants! That’s amazing and we love having you involved in the process!

Ultimately it’s about making the best game possible with the total amount we receive. We’ll be using any amount of extra funding to add new features and iterate on the ideas generated not just by us, but by you—the community!

Double Fine is back and they’re asking your help to make Massive Chalice real

Yep, Double Fine is back with a new Kickstarter project! This time is about turn-based tactics and feudal fantasy, in the brand new RPG called Massive Chalice.

The guys at Double Fine stated that the game, if backed, will be inspired by classic tactical strategy games like X-COM, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Emblem, as well as Game of Thrones’ array of noble families. With these influences in mind they promise to create an epic, replayable turn-based tactics game where you train generations of heroes to repel a demonic invasion.

Any more detail? Massive Chalice is a single player turn-based tactics game within a multi-generational strategy campaign built for replayability.

As an immortal King or Queen, you must unite your kingdom under a powerful dynasty, eliminate the demonic threat, and reforge the so-called Massive Chalice!

The game is structured into two main layers: strategy and tactics. In the strategy layer, you oversee your kingdom, arrange royal marriages, conduct research, and make the far-reaching decisions that will determine the fate of your legacy. In the tactics layer, you fight brutal turn-based battles to defend your kingdom using small squads of customizable heroes.

Permadeath is inevitable: your heroes will grow, age, and eventually die. You’ll have to choose between keeping your favorite heroes on the battlefield or retiring them from combat to foster a new generation of warriors.

Each playthrough begins with a random assortment of male and female heroes from various bloodlines, guaranteeing that each game is unique. Your knowledge and skill will increase over multiple playthroughs, but the details of every game will change based on your decisions and the whims of fate.

The Kickstarter campaign has started today, it will last for 28 more days, and the final goal is $725k (as we’re writing this, they’ve raised more than $30k so far). As usual, if you feel positive about the project, here’s the Kickstarter page to throw your money at!

The Humble Double Fine bundle

Double Fine Productions is back with a brand new Humble Double Fine Bundle! As usual the rules are the following: Pay what you want. Support charity. Get cross-platform, DRM-free games.

So we’re in, but what’s in the pack? Pay what you want and get the beloved and hilarious platformer Psychonauts; the matryoshka doll epic adventure Stacking; and the adorable adventure/RPG Costume Quest. If you pay over the average, you’ll get the heavy metal action/adventure/RTS rocker Brütal Legend. You’ll also become a slacker backer of Double Fine’s Kickstarter point-and-click adventure game, Broken Age, with a purchase of $35 or more and receive the finished game and bonus content that comes with it! And if you pay $70 or more you’ll receive a limited edition Double Fine T-shirt (choose from two color options) in addition to everything else! Additionally, this bundle includes tons of soundtracks that will have your ears jumping for joy!

The cool thing is that YOU can decide how divide your contribution among Double Fine, the Humble Bundle Inc. and the two charity foundations involved in the project, Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child’s Play.

So, this all sounds amazing…you’re going to get hours of absolutely crazy fun with all those games and also you will give your help to children in need. What the hell are you waiting for? Here’s the link to get this!

Capy Fine Racing GP will be released at PAX East

capybara double fine pax

We already told you that at PAX game devs just go crazy, so here we are again! Capybara Games and Double Fine Production are sharing the same booth at this week’s PAX East, so they decided to release a special retail version of the same boundle you can buy on Steam. This special edition will be limited to only 200 copies and will be available only at their shared PAX booth.

The box will contain all the games from the Steam pack, plus a very cool gem: the two games studios teamed up to develop a racer, called Capy Fine Racing GP and featuring all the characters from both companies. But this isn’t all, indeed the racing game will be released on floppy disk…yep, you heard it right, old school 1.44 MB floppy disk!

Capy Fine Racing GP PAX

This is what Capy co-founder Nathan Vella has told to EDGE regarding the co-developed racing game:

“Ken Yeung and Vic Nguyen made a game called Capy Fine Racing GP, which is a little jokey – but still rad fun – OutRun-style racer staring Capy and Double Fine characters. The game will be released on the 3.5″ floppies that come inside the Capy and Double Fine limited edition boxed bundle, AKA the retail version of the Steam bundle that we just launched which includes both studios’ Steam games. We only made 200 boxes, and even then some of the floppies might not work, but the people who buy them will be allowed and encouraged to share the game.

It’s just something we did for pure fun and loving the idea of doing cool shit with our friends, in the spirit of the Capy Double Fine PAX combo. While it’s totally a real game, it’s also not at all a real game.”

If you are at PAX right now, you definitely should try to put your hands on one of those limited edition boxes! Good luck!
