Hot Tin Roof is the new 3D noir cat-filled game from Glass Bottom

26 Aug

hot tin roof

Do you remember Glass Bottom Games? The guys (actually more gals) that made Jones on Fire? Well, they’re back, and this time to bring us  Hot Tin Roof: The Cat That Wore A Fedora. It’s a noir 3D side-scrolling platformer (currently) for PC, Mac and Linux where players have to explore and uncover clues, with the usual bit of cats here and there.

You’re Emma Jones, a two bit girl in an 8-bit world, and you’re the private investigator on a string of grisly murders.  You’ll run, jump and climb through a massive 3D city, sleuthing up clues and tracking down the killer. Enjoy the trailer.

We had the luck to try a beta version in advance (but ssshh, that’s a secret!) and it looks gorgeous! Definitely something we want to see finished! You all be able to try it too at next PAX.

Hot Tin Roof is currently on Kickstarter (throw them some money here) and on Steam Greenlight (vote it here).

Still uncertain if backing the game or not? Here are some features you might want consider:

    • Noir as fuck.
    • Tons of platforming and exploring, hunting for clues.
    • Cats, but not JUST cats. Pigeons too, and rats!
    • Metroidvania-esque – just more of the Metroid, less of the vania.

That’s all, we can just hope all the luck to Glass Bottom Games for their new project, hoping it’ll be able to see the light of day.

Last weekend at PAX East, beside all the well-known game companies, there was also Compulsion Games. An emerging indie game studio, born and raised in Montreal, Canada, working on a very interesting project: a game called Contrast.

Experience a surreal 1920s dreamscape in which you can shift freely in and out of shadows. Tasked with helping a young girl named Didi, players will unravel the mysteries behind her troubled family and the dark secrets that must be exposed to re-shape her future. Contrast will let you play with your own shadow, literally. The game is basically a platformer where you can become a shadow in order to climb and interact with other shadows. Take a look at this teaser trailer to figure it out.

If you want to know more about this game here’s a small video interview to Guillaume Provost, creative director and founder of Compulsion Gamesmade by Kotaku at PAX.

“We began development on Contrast four years ago and are excited to finally unveil it to the public. We chose to be part of the PAX East Indie Megabooth in order to give back to the amazing community that has helped support the game during our successful Greenlight campaign on Steam. Contrast will transport players into a vaudevillian world of shadows and mysteries, where story elements are discovered through the manipulation of light, and it introduces new gameplay paradigms for interacting and navigating the world.”

Contrast is set to be released on Spring 2013 on Steam, but the exact release date is still TBA.

Capy Fine Racing GP will be released at PAX East

22 Mar

capybara double fine pax

We already told you that at PAX game devs just go crazy, so here we are again! Capybara Games and Double Fine Production are sharing the same booth at this week’s PAX East, so they decided to release a special retail version of the same boundle you can buy on Steam. This special edition will be limited to only 200 copies and will be available only at their shared PAX booth.

The box will contain all the games from the Steam pack, plus a very cool gem: the two games studios teamed up to develop a racer, called Capy Fine Racing GP and featuring all the characters from both companies. But this isn’t all, indeed the racing game will be released on floppy disk…yep, you heard it right, old school 1.44 MB floppy disk!

Capy Fine Racing GP PAX

This is what Capy co-founder Nathan Vella has told to EDGE regarding the co-developed racing game:

“Ken Yeung and Vic Nguyen made a game called Capy Fine Racing GP, which is a little jokey – but still rad fun – OutRun-style racer staring Capy and Double Fine characters. The game will be released on the 3.5″ floppies that come inside the Capy and Double Fine limited edition boxed bundle, AKA the retail version of the Steam bundle that we just launched which includes both studios’ Steam games. We only made 200 boxes, and even then some of the floppies might not work, but the people who buy them will be allowed and encouraged to share the game.

It’s just something we did for pure fun and loving the idea of doing cool shit with our friends, in the spirit of the Capy Double Fine PAX combo. While it’s totally a real game, it’s also not at all a real game.”

If you are at PAX right now, you definitely should try to put your hands on one of those limited edition boxes! Good luck!
