And here we are again, talking about Shenmue. But no Shenmue 3 rumors or hoaxes today, just facts. In fact appears that SEGA just lost the Shenmue trademark in the US.
As you can see from this USPTO page about the trademark “Shenmue”, SEGA is no longer the owner of the franchise name. Here’s what the USPTO says:
“Registration cancelled because registrant did not file an acceptable declaration under Section 8. To view all documents in this file, click on the Trademark Document Retrieval link at the top of this page.”
Section 8 of the US Trademark Act applies to “continued use” or “excusable nonuse” of registered marks, giving trademark holders a window of time to prove that it’s either still using the mark in question or has a good reason for not using it (and we know that SEGA hasn’t one).
So it could mean either that SEGA hasn’t provided enough evidence to show that it is still using the trademark to keep ownership or it gave up on the series entirely and forever.
Let’s see what happens next…Kickstarter anyone?
