Hyperkin’s RetroN 5 gets delayed until 2014

retron 5

Earlier this year we reported the announcement of the RetroN 4, the multi-retro-compatible console by Hyperkin. But since then, the guys at the American manufacturer have continued developing, believing on the power of retrogaming (we love them!); so the RetroN 5 has been announced.

What is SEGA Spectrum?

28 May

sega spectrum e3

The image above was posted by a NeoGAF user a while ago, but still nobody has a clue on what this mysterious SEGA Spectrum is.

For those who don’t speak Japanese, the text says “A new world of entertainment”, but it could be referred to everything. Starting with a long waited return of SEGA in the hardware market with a brand new console (which is highly unlikely) to some sort of digital platform for releasing arcade titles directly to the cabinet’s boards (similar to the one from Taito).

Everything is possible, and we’ll know the truth soon enough as the date points to June 6th, exactly during this year’s E3.

Meet Xbox One

21 May

Yep, this is it! The brand new Microsoft game console, the XBOX ONE (nice name, no really). And below you can admire its brand new shaped controller.

Here some more details:

• 8 gigs of RAM

• USB 3.0

• Wi-Fi Direct

Blu-Ray disc drive (wondering how much is Sony’s bill for this)

• 64-bit architecture

Wired (that tried the new Xbox) reported that Xbox One will NOT require an always-online internet connection, but due to an installation of every game on the HDD and a registration on the Xbox site required, Microsoft confirmed with that while installations to other hard drives are allowed, users will need to pay an unspecified fee to do so. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?? So I need to pay even if I borrow a game from my friend. Thanks.

The Xbox One won’t play any existing Xbox 360 games, said Microsoft’s Marc Whitten in an interview with The Verge.

“The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn’t really work from that perspective.”

Microsoft’s Harvey Eagle told IGN another super good news (see: irony). In fact seems like your Kinect will need to be connected in order for the Xbox One to function:

“Kinect does require to be connected to Xbox One in all cases, yes.”

Xbox One will hit the stores this fall, but still no release date.

SEGA and Nintendo enter an exclusive partnership for Sonic franchise

18 May

sega nintendo partnership sonic

The war is officially over! Well, it’s been over for years actually, but it’s a today’s news that SEGA and Nintendo entered an exclusive partnership for the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. This new agreement will make Nintendo consoles the number one destination for Sonic gaming over the next three titles. But here’s the official press release by SEGA:

SEGA® of America Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced details of an exclusive partnership with Nintendo of America Inc. and Nintendo of Europe GmbH for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The new agreement will make Nintendo consoles the number one destination for Sonic gaming over the next three titles. The first two titles of the deal were announced today via Nintendo Direct, and details of the third Sonic title will be revealed at a later date.

“Sonic the Hedgehog has performed incredibly well on Nintendo platforms and this exclusive partnership is a natural fit for the next evolution of Sonic games” commented Jurgen Post COO SEGA Europe Ltd.  “The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are ideal platforms to showcase Sonic and we are looking forward to working with Nintendo on these three exciting adventures.”

Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared as a videogame character in June 1991 and instantly became an icon for a generation of gamers.  Defined by his super-fast speed and cool attitude, in the years since he first raced on to videogame consoles Sonic has become a true global phenomenon with over 75 million videogames and smartphone apps sold worldwide. SEGA’s iconic blue blur has also gone on to enjoy incredible success in many licensed areas, such as toys, apparel, comics and animation.

Wondering what are the first two Sonic titles exclusive for Nintendo consoles? Here we go! Actually is just one title, it’s called Sonic Lost World, and will be released on both Wii U and 3DS on a tba date.

What happened to the SEGA Pluto eBay auction?

13 May

sega pluto roger vega

So, let’s recap a bit. Firstly a former SOJ (see: SEGA of Japan) employee revealed a very old console prototype, called SEGA Pluto, that basically is just a Saturn with internet connection, but there are no other known unites around, so we assume it’s pretty rare. Than another guy (pictured above), after seeing all the news about the Pluto, realized that he got one in his collection (what a lucky guy!). So only two of them in the entire world, still pretty rare.

This second chap then decided to put his long-forgotten-fresh-discovered SEGA Pluto prototype up on a eBay auction, but the auction finished at $15.5k with reserve price not met. Such a shame! Is that possible that the guy is so greedy not to accept more than $15k for an old console?

SEGA Nerds guys reached Roger Vega (this is the name of the young man) to ask some question about the auction. So here we go!

SEGA Pluto eBay auction finishes at $15k but with reserve price not met

10 May

We’ve already told you about the SEGA Pluto console dropped on a eBay auction few days ago. Well, now the auction is over, but the prototype stills unsold.

We saw this coming. The seller was quite greedy to put such an high reserve price, that remains unknown, but for sure is more than $15.5k, that was the final bid reached by the auction.

Will the seller try again? We really think so…stay tuned!

SEGA Pluto up to auction on eBay

7 May

SEGA Pluto prototype console ebay price

Do you remember the huge revelation about the two super-secret SEGA Pluto prototype consoles we told you a while ago? Good, because one of them is currently on eBay.

Yep, that was predictable. In the end it’s just two-of-a-kind so we’re not really surprised about that (saw that, at least, one of the owner didn’t even know what the hell it was).

The thing that wasn’t predictable is that the auction has already reached more than $8000 and it’s still 3 days to go. Yes, that’s an huge amount of money! But don’t get too excited, because the actual eBay auction says that the reserve price has not been met yet (you, greedy bastard!). For now we can just wait, we’ll keep you posted!

Check it by yourself!

Meet Pluto, the prototype SEGA console that never saw the light of day

19 Apr

sega pluto prototype

We are all fascinated by prototype and obscure dev kit from the past, especially when they come from the somehow mysterious SEGA hardware dev department (that obviously is no more).

So you probably already hear about this kind of stuff, like, for example the SEGA Neptune, but we’re quite sure that the SEGA Pluto is something new for most of you (and also for us).

A couple of days ago, a SEGA ex-employee shared with the world the first pictures about a piece of hardware that never saw the light of day, nothing really out of this world, but basically an internet enabled Saturn, codename: Pluto.

Here’s what the owner said about how he got the prototype:

“Sega is a company with a history of turmoil. Employee turnover is a sad theme, and the Sonic Reaper (as we call him) strikes all too frequently. As such, the past gets forgotten quickly — treasures from the previous generation are quickly cast aside, as a new regime tries to make a name for themselves (or justify their existence). As such, some of said treasures get left on laid-off-peoples’ desks. And in a beautiful twist of fate, this beauty ended up finding its way to my desk, and then in a box with the rest of my stuff when I left Sega.”

The sticker under the console says “PLUTO-02” so this means that should be even a prototype 01, somewhere, maybe. And there is indeed!

After the pics went online, the owner of the other known Pluto showed up with this video.

Did you hear? This Pluto is going to find its way to ebay! Stay tuned.
